By 1946 Peter's last year, the (Gopher) Year book reported that he was voted ‘Snow King’ during Snow Week.




And together with his ‘Snow Queen’, he had his picture taken for the local paper.



And despite his earlier confusion with girls, Peter met his future wife, the stunningly beautiful Joan Endress, when she auditioned for one of the plays that Peter was also auditioning for.




But before they could get engaged, Joan's family demanded that Peter found a steady job. He considered going East to start a career in the theatre, but a professor advised him to try a career in the movies.





          So Peter left University early and with his good friend Jack Smight headed for Hollywood.

  'Childhood'  2 Music played a large part in young Peters life. Infatuated with the music of Benny Goodman, he longed to play the clarinet just like his idol, and when the chance came in High School to be part of the school band he eagerly waited in line, hoping to be given the longed for clarinet. Sadly, because he was a bit taller than his fellow class mates, he ended up with a tube. He dragged the miserable instrument home crying for much of the way.  'Early Career'  1   In the end, Peter’s family played a key role in his decision to go west. His brother Jim Arness, who had dropped the ‘U’ from his surname because it was difficult to pronounce, had moved to Los Angeles after the war and was starting his acting career. One summer while still at university, Peter visited Jim and was very impressed.   But, in 1949, a few months before he was due to graduate, the pull of Hollywood was too strong to ignore any longer, and Peter with his good friend Jack Smight finally made it to Los Angeles. A concerned James met Peter at the Los Angeles Union Station, but told him, “My advice to you, is to get on that train and go right back.
