Contrary to his concerns, Peter through himself into Acting and Campus life. He took part in such performances as ‘The Wild Duck’, by Haakon Ibsen, and ‘A Dream Play’, by August Strindberg.











And here a video of his fellow class mate, Jack Smight who eventually became a director in his own right, telling an amusing story of a failed exam.

Hi, this is a new platform for me and you will have to bear with me. I consider myself to be more of a researcher than a writer, but after almost 5 years of research, now seems the right time to put pen to paper, so-to-speak.   'Childhood'  2 Music played a large part in young Peters life. Infatuated with the music of Benny Goodman, he longed to play the clarinet just like his idol, and when the chance came in High School to be part of the school band he eagerly waited in line, hoping to be given the longed for clarinet. Sadly, because he was a bit taller than his fellow class mates, he ended up with a tube. He dragged the miserable instrument home crying for much of the way.  'Early Career'  1   In the end, Peter’s family played a key role in his decision to go west. His brother Jim Arness, who had dropped the ‘U’ from his surname because it was difficult to pronounce, had moved to Los Angeles after the war and was starting his acting career. One summer while still at university, Peter visited Jim and was very impressed.   But, in 1949, a few months before he was due to graduate, the pull of Hollywood was too strong to ignore any longer, and Peter with his good friend Jack Smight finally made it to Los Angeles. A concerned James met Peter at the Los Angeles Union Station, but told him, “My advice to you, is to get on that train and go right back.
